Foot is in Pain. Yuck!

26 Jan

I slightly sprained my left foot two times in September and November last year. It began to twinge for a day or two but the pain disappeared. I thought it wasn’t serious so I didn’t take care of it. It was a mistake by me.

The pain on my foot came back and it is tender again. I am experiencing some shooting pains when I press on the ankle area. I probably walk funny without knowing it the past months. It is now affecting my body alignment. Now my other parts of my body aches and sores. Yuck!

This isn’t new to me and I feel terrible and upset.  about it. Sigh! The recovery takes weeks. It includes P.R.I.C.E.: protection, rest, ice, compression, and elevation.  I also includes regular visit to the chiropractor, taping, exercise moderately, cutting back high impact stuff, taking rest days, and making sure the pain is really gone. I hope to speed up the recovery process by rubbing and soaking my foot with Chinese aged medicine liquor.

Wish me luck.

A New Year’s Plan

6 Jan

This is my first blog post of the new year.

Happy 2010 everyone. Hope all of you had a blast and wonderful holiday. As for me I had a long holiday. Actually I pretty much got the same number of day offs like everybody else. But I had been a lazy girl throughout the holiday.

One day I took some time to write out some new year resolution.  Well I admitted some of them are so familiar. Since I have been slacking off quite a bit in Q4 of 2009. I am going to begin with extra effort and go extra miles to reach my goals. May the force be with me the whole year. I mean really talking about “all 4 quarters” of the whole year.

A little fun fact from Quirkology showing that while 52% of participants in a resolution study were confident of success with their goals, only 12% actually achieved their goals. Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, a system where small measurable goals are used (lose a pound a week, instead of saying “lose weight”), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends.

I had mine written down on a piece of paper and placed it somewhere very prominent on my desk. This will work this time.

Return from Abroad

22 Oct

I’m back. Recently I spent a whole month over in HK. This long overdue trip was my first holiday for over two years. I had a great time catching up with my family members and friends but also got to know baby J. It has been a wonderful time but hectic. I won’t be taking any long trip soon. I am drained from this trip.

Fortune Cookie Brings A Smile

6 Sep

two Chinese fortune cookiesA fortune cookie is a crispy Asian American cookie usually made of flour, sugar, vanilla, and oil with a “fortune” wrapped inside. It is usually served with Chinese food in Chinese restaurant. Nowadays, there are not many Chinese restaurants in my area that serve fortune cookie. But today I am surprised to receive one fortune cookie after a nice meal. Then, I remember how much fun fortune cookies were when I was a kid. However, the fun of cracking open a fortune cookie still exists. Although I am not too fond of the taste of the hard cookie, I still love to see what my fortune says. Sometimes the fortunes are great, sometimes they are funny and sometimes they are nonsense. The most important thing is that my friends and I have a great time passing them around and share what their fortunes are. It always put a smile on our faces!

Driver license renewal: Smile no more

22 Jul

neutral faceIs Vancouver banning smiles for driver license photos? I think so. Drivers are now required to have neutral face expressions when having their photo taken. The reason is to avoid fraud
using advanced facial recognition software. Why do you take away my smiling freedom? Great, so now my driver license picture will look even more like a police mug shot (although I don’t have one, I am sure my face will look the same). There is no smiling for my Canadian passport already (and I hate my picture there), and now the driver license. So all my identification pictures will look as if I never enjoy life or never had fun in my entire life.

I thought they are using advanced facial recognition software. Oh well, some experts claim that this technology is not yet sophisticated enough to differentiate between the same person smiling and not smiling. Then if the software can’t handle a smile, what the heck happens if someone grows a beard hiding the chin. One has to ask if this isn’t somehow the beginning of machines dictating our behavior…or someone behind the machines.

I totally object this idea. I like to smile in all my photos and I think I look prettier smiling as well.

[Side Note. Okay, that’s not what I learnt from watching the CSI shows. On the show, the software can zoom in and out; if the subject’s head is blurred or is sideways, the software can recognize the person with no problem. Obviously, the shows are fooling me. Gotta stop watching too much TV.]
